A play in a private room at Sing Sing Karaoke, a karaoke bar in the East Village, Dead Behind These Eyes from Sister Sylvester incorporates dialogue from John Osborne’s Look Back In Anger with singing, dancing, recent citizen video reporting, and furry costumes.

Nonesuch Records at BAM

Famed record label Nonesuch Records celebrates 50 years in the business with a series of concerts at BAM’s Next Wave Festival. Notably, composers Steve Reich and Philip Glass will take the stage together for the first time in 30 years.

Bootycandy

Bootycandy is a series of 10 playlets about growing up black and gay by Robert O’Hara at Playwrights Horizons. The early buzz is super hot for this show.

The Fortress of Solitude

We get the inside scoop on this upcoming production from The Public Theater, The Fortress of Solitude, a new musical conceived by director Daniel Aukin with collaborators composer and lyricist Michael Friedman and playwright Itamar Moses. It is based on the book The Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem. Isaac’s been a witness to parts of the development process and seen workshop performances of the piece.

Ndebele Funeral

Ndebele Funeral from New York based theater collective Smoke and Mirrors is a three person play set in a one room shack in Soweto, South Africa. Zoey Martinson wrote the play and will appear in the production at 59E59 Theaters this fall. For more on Martinson, check out Maxamoo’s video interview with her during last year’s New York City International Fringe Festival, where Ndebele Funeral debuted.

This is a highly anticipated revival of Kenneth Lonergan’s This Is Our Youth featuring Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, and Tavi Gevinson and directed by Anna D. Shapiro.

Theater: Village

Theater: Village is four plays at four theaters in the West Village all on the topic of diversity in the United States: Juárez: A Documentary Mythology from Theater Mitu at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater; I Like to be Here: Jackson Heights Revisions, or This is a Mango from Theatre 167 at New Ohio Theater; To The Bone at Cherry Lane Theater; and Solitary Light at Axis Theater.

Scenes from a Marriage

A stage adaption of Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage, directed by Ivo van Hove at New York Theater Workshop, which reports the show “is a fluid theatrical piece in which audience members will move from room to room to experience an intimate look into the marriage of Johan and Marianne.”

Let Me Ascertain You

Let Me Ascertain You, The Civilians cabaret performance combines short readings and songs created verbatim from investigatory interviews. This is The Civilians first show at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the company is in residence all year. The September performances are sold out but they’ve hinted additional tickets will be released closer to the performance dates.
