Blink – Location, Tickets Review
Blink is not your typical boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl live happily ever after love story, although it is a story about a boy who, eventually, meets a girl and they do fall in love.
Thomas Pickles (Jonah) and Lizzy Watts (Sophie) star in this deceptively simple love story by Phil Porter. The story unfolds via alternating monologues addressed directly to the audience. It employs a unique meet cute device that strains the bounds of credulity but ultimately facilitates an intriguing and tension-filled build up to their relationship.
Meeting potential mates and forming lasting relationships is a topic well-explored in the theater but the impact of modern technology on dating is only beginning to come under examination on stage. Via an unusual information sharing arrangement, our protagonists in Blink examine the modern paradox of having a lot of information about another person but not really know that person. Just as one may Google and discover intimate details about a total stranger, so Jonah observes, follows, and loves Sophie from afar. Is that creepy or cute? In Blink, as in life, we learn it’s a fine line between the two.
Recommended for Anglophiles (the production hails from and is set in the U.K. and is presented at 59E59 Theaters as part of the 2014 Brits Off Broadway Festival), lovers of twee tinged with melancholy, and anyone curious about modern romance.
