Annapurna – Location, Tickets, Reviews
The New Group presents the New York premiere of Annapurna after a popular run at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in Los Angeles in 2013.
Annapurna features real life husband and wife, Nick Offerman (TV: Parks and Recreation) and Megan Mullally (TV: Will and Grace) as Ulysses and Emma, a divorced couple who reunite for the first time since Emma walked out on their marriage 20 years earlier, taking their son Sam with her. Ulysses is now severely ill and living alone in a trailer in the mountains of Colorado. Emma appears on his doorstep without warning and the two unearth many years of repressed emotions.

Annapurna is a well-designed production. It puts on stage the detailed interior of a decrepit trailer with a backdrop of snow-covered mountains on three sides. The setting creates a cramped and messy space of physical chaos, the perfect tone for the play.
Audience members are treated to 90 minutes of intimate conversation that escalates from teasing to bickering and, finally, to full throttle emotional outpouring. The conversation is filled with sharp remarks and darkly humorous banter, which is initially interesting but watching a couple fight eventually becomes tedious, especially when their quarrel goes back and forth but without getting to the point–why Emma left 20 years ago. Offerman and Mullally deliver impressive performances invoking the stress and tension of two lovers tormented by the past and present troubles. But the prolonged suspense grew irritating and, even worse, the final revelation didn’t live up to the hype.

Sharr White’s script doesn’t pack the same emotional gut punch, but that’s no reason to dismiss this fine work.
